Winter Home Tips
- Vacuum bathroom vent/fans(s).
- Pass a lit candle around doors and windows to check for drafts. Weatherstrip and caulk as necessary.
- Check for leaks under sinks and around toilets.
- Test Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt (GFCI) receptacles and GFCI circuit breakers.
- Restock on batteries, flashlights, blankets, and non-perishable, to be prepared in the event of a bad weather power outage. Review emergency procedures.
- Test smoke/carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries.
- Inspect and clean oven hood, and filter.
- Clean bathroom drains of hair and debris.
- Clean the sump pump and check the drainage speed
- Service garbage disposal by grinding a few ice cubes.
- Replace or clean the furnace filter.
- Dust/clean interior light fixtures.
- Empty refrigerator and drain pan and clean condensation coils.
- Inspect and clean the dryer exhaust vent.
- Clean dishwasher filter. Check the dishwasher and drain line for leaks.
- Touch up interior paint that’s scuffed, stained, or chipped.
- Dust surfaces untouched by regular cleaning- including behind furniture appliances and bookcases.
- Relax and enjoy the cozy home you’ve created.
Winter is a time to slow down and take stock- literally and figuratively. Above all else, take some time for yourself. You’ve earned it.
